It was a rainy night before Thanksgiving in Louisville as Ohio Valley Wrestling taped its television show in front of around 100 fans, who were fairly enthusiastic all night long. 100 is up from what they've been doing lately. Dean Hill and Kenny Bolin were the TV announcers. Bolin last week here retired from managing, something he hasn't been doing anyway, but remains on as TV announcer. Ron Hed and Brittany DeVore were the ring announcers.
1. Raphael Constantine beat Raul Lamotta
Dark match. Contantine went right to work here. Did a bunch of spots, 'Ranas and such, but a lot of them looked really fakey. Lamotta hit a tilt-a-whirl back breaker, followed by a submission attempt. Lamotta went a back suplex, but Constantine countered it into a body press for the win. Not a very good match.
2. Alex Silva beat Omar Akbar (with Mohammad Ali Vaez & Mr. B)
This was the start of the TV taping. Vaez, the OVW TV champ, went to the announce desk and took Bolin's mic then rattled on awhile. Silva went for his unique running knee, but it didn't work on the powerful Akbar, as Silva bounced right off of him. Neat spot. Akbar took control, and hit a running knee of his own, not nearly as pretty as Silva's though. Silva came back with some dropkicks, including one in the corner. Silva hit a Swanton off the top rope for a two count. He tried it again but got crotched. Akbar hit his trademark released Fishermans suplex, but Silva kicked out. Silva barely grazed Akbar with an Enziguri. Vaez got up on the apron on the far side to distract referee Chris Sharpe. Akbar gave Silva the eye poke of doom, and was going for a Piledriver, but Mr. B got on the apron on the other side, told Akbar to stop, and pulled out some handcuffs. Silva slugged B off the apron, got the handcuffs, hit Akbar with them, and this garnered him his first win in OVW. Postmatch saw Mr. B in the ring yelling at the fallen Akbar, as Vaez, like last week, was again in shock over the loss. As I said last week, I don't think Mr. B is much longer for this group. Some thing's going down soon here for sure.
Jim Cornette got in the ring, and had three referees with him. Out came Paredyse, w/his "man-servant" CJ Lane, and Rudy Switchblade. Switchblade, coming off vision problems after CJ Lane sprayed him with mace at the November 13th Saturday Night Special, said last week that this week he had some things to say to Paredyse "face to face, amd eye to eye". Switchblade said every time he wrestles Paredyse he manages to slip thru his fingers. He demanded one more match with Paredyse.
Paredyse started talking in a comical, almost Shakespearean, type manner. Paredyse asked Switchblade to tell him what Paredyse means to him. Cornette pointed out that it was really CJ Lane that was the difference in Paredyse beating Switchblade in their matches. Switchblade said he was sitting home thinking how do you beat a man that breaks all the rules, then it hit him, you change the rules. Switchblade said he called his cousin in California, and wanted a mixed tag match. Paredyse said no to that, but CJ Lane wanted it saying "I could lick any girl", so Paredyse agreed to the match.
Switchblade said his cousin was actually here now, and out came Black lady wrestler Epiphany, now called Epiphany Jones, while Aretha Franklin's "Respect" started playing. Jones went nuts chasing Lane and Paredyse around, then as a babyface, bodyslammed ref Chris Sharpe. Cornette's foot got tangled in the mic cable during all this, and I thought he might go down for a second, but he didn't. Heh. Epiphany looks more like Mark Henry's sister than Rudy Switchblade's cousin to me, but part of Switchblade's gimmick is I think he claims to be 1/16th, or something like that, of every race in the world. The mixed tag match between these teams will take place at the December 11th Saturday Night Special.
3. The Elite (Ted McNaler & Adam Revolver) beat Ryan Nemeth & Dre Blitz
Nemeth got some offense in early, but as McNaler was being whipped into the ropes, his partner Revolver ran over and grabbed him, causing Nemeth to miss a drop kick. Interesting spot. It was a match of double team moves by the Elite, as they pulled several off, and won with one. Blitz annoys me because he's a guy that celebrates too much when he gets the slightest bit of offense in. He's like a linebacker making a tackle in the 4th quarter of a game his team is losing by 40 points, then doing a wacky celebration dance. Then again, he doesn't get much offense in, so I guess that's why he's so happy when he does. The finish saw the Elite hit their double team spear spot on Blitz as Nemeth was arguing with the ref.
Dean Hill and Jim Cornette did a stand up in front of the desk. Cornette spoke of the OVW heavyweight title situation between champion "Lowrider" Matt Barela and Mike Mondo. They threw it to clips from last week where Mondo explained why he turned heel and hit Barela with a chair at the November 13th Saturday Night Special, giving him a concussion.
Back to now, Cornette was in the ring, and brought out a very angry Matt Barela. Barela said he thought he could trust Mondo, but things have changed. Barela said the concussion he suffered put him out of work, and caused his wife to miss work because she had to care for him. Barela said he tuned in OVW television last week and saw Mike Mondo offering him a check for $1,000. He told Mondo to stick the check up his a$$. Barela said he was now cleared by the doctor. Barela said he came here today looking for Mondo, but he's nowhere to be found. Barela was angry at Cornette because Corny told Mondo not to be there, and Barela demanded Cornette explain why. Cornette said Barela just answered his own question. He said he's heard about the threats Barela made against Mondo, and knew he might well carry thru on them. Cornette said he didn't want Barela to end up in jail over the holiday season, and said Barela has already lost money over missed work. Cornette said he told Mike Mondo, for his own safety, to not show back up to the Davis Arena until his title match against Barela at Saturday Night Special on December 11th. Mondo was said to be going on a tour of the Smash Japan promotion, so maybe that's where he's at until then, I don't know that for sure though.
Out came "Mr. Media" Cliff Compton w/Mo Green and the Paparazzi guy, who Barela beat at Saturday Night Special to retain the OVW title. Compton asked Barela if he's stupid, then said of course you are, you're a Mexican, along with some other racial remarks. Cornette told Compton to knock off the racist stuff. Compton said like every dirty Mexican, Barela cheated, and that's how he beat him. Barela blew Compton's air horn in his face then pinned him, which was a totally fakey and stupid looking finish BTW. Just horrible. Compton called it the cheapest victory in OVW history. Compton said he's going to keep the trend going, on December 11th, he and Mo Green are going to be watching at ringside during Barela vs Mondo, and will challenge the winner. Compton hinted strongly he was going to help Mondo win. Cornette got frustrated and said he's had it with people at ringside screwing up OVW title matches, and if necessary, he will have the Louisville Police Department there to stop Compton from being at ringside. Barela said he didn't want Compton escorted out of the building on December 11th. Cornette asked why. Barla said he's going to take care of it now, and attacked Barela, which the crowd was hot for. Cornette went to the floor and was ringing the bell.
Compton wore some super loose jogging pants, so loose they were literally falling off him as he was whipped to the ropes a few times. Barela ripped the t-shirt and pants off of Compton, who was stripped down to his black underwear, two socks, and one shoe. Compton took Mo Green's derby hat and covered his man jewels with it.
Long segment, and the crowd was into most of it. I didn't like how it ended though, with Compton being stripped. To me that added a comedy touch to the whole thing that didn't fit the segment at all, being as the whole thing is about making the OVW title seem important, which they've done a good job of.
4. James "Moose" Thomas beat Tilo Samoa & Benjamin Bray in a handicap match
Kenny Bolin's son, Christopher Bolin, came out and did commentary with his dad and Dean Hill here. Christopher Bolin is the new leader of Bolin Services, 2.0. Thomas needed to be rehabbed a bit following his recent losses to Matt Barela and Flash Flanagan, so they let him beat up two stumble bums at once here. Bray and Samoa tried to work it like a tag match, but God knows why because Moose just threw them both around at will. The finish saw Thomas pin both guys at the same time after giving them each a big splash. Christopher quickly left soon as this match ended. I suspect Christopher's first charge as a pro wrestling manager will be James "Moose" Thomas.
5. Mohammad Ali Vaez (with Mr. B) beat Christopher "Dynamite" Silvio (with Raphael Constantine) to retain the OVW TV title
This was the TV main event. Notable that Omar Akbar wasn't out with Vaez and B at the start. Silvio and Constantine are collectively known as "Fighting Spirit", and are the current OVW Southern tag team champions. Silvio attempted to catch Vaez in the LeBell Lock from the opening bell. Vaez tried some chops in the corner, but they sucked. Silvio showed him how to do it. Vaez went for a double armed DDT, but Silvio reversed it and applied the LeBell Lock right in mid ring. Vaez made some nice turns, and made the ropes. Silvio took a nasty spill to the floor when Vaez pulled the top rope down as Silvio was charging him. Back in the ring, Silvio missed a chop, and Vaez caught him with a German Suplex for a two count. Vaez broke out some of the "other" Muhammad Ali style punches, but Silvio caught him right on the button with a super kick in a great spot. Silvio followed with heavy kicks to the mid-section of Vaez. Vaez was in more trouble, so Mr. B got up on the apron, but Silvio slugged him off. Omar Akbar ran out and got on the apron, but Constantine yanked him off, and they brawled on the floor, with ref Chris Sharpe screaming at them to stop. Meanwhile in the ring, Silvio leveled Vaez with another super kick, but no ref to count the pin. The Elite (McNaler & Revolver) then ran out, but Silvio knocked them into each other, then took them both out with a pretty Asai Moonsault to the floor. Back in the ring, Silvio was stomping ala HBK to set up another super kick, but missed it, and Vaez caught him with a neckbreaker and won the match. Really exciting TV main event, and almost amazing that Vaez, the heel, actually won the match cleanly amid all the people that ran out and got involved in this one. The Elite, even though they took a beating, looked pleased on the floor that Silvio lost. The 90 day stip that the Elite and Fighting Spirit can't face other is up, so I strongly suspect that match to happen again soon. Like at the next Saturday Night Special, and possibly at one of the ROH TV tapings.
They actually raffled off a VCR during the intermission. Before the dark match main event, Dean Hill took the mic and introduced a potential newcomer to OVW, a guy he said came up to him in the parking lot some weeks ago asking for a chance to sit behind the TV desk and announce. Hill said the guy called pro wrestling in Portland, Oregon, and is currently a news anchor for Fox and ABC in Charleston, West Virginia. His name is Gilbert Corsey. He's a black guy. Boy, that's going to be a heck of a commute if he's going to come to Louisville from West Virginia every Wednesday. Let's just hope he doesn't turn out to be the new Corey Maclin of pro wrestling. Corsey announced the dark match with Kenny Bolin and Ron Hed.
6. Rudy Switchblade beat "Mr. Media" Cliff Compton (with The Paparazzi guy) by DQ
Dark Match. Notable that Mo Green wasn't with Compton here. Before the match, Compton went around the arena, standing on the guard rail, etc, having the Paparazzi guy take pictures of him. Switchblade somersaulted into the ring, Compton hit him with a clothesline, and this match was on. Something was bad wrong though, these guys seemed to only be going half speed, especially Compton, who didn't seem to be into doing this match at all. To a surprising degree. Something was up here, just don't know what. Crowd was dead here too, for the only time all night. Just weird. Switchblade gave Compton a chokeslam, then went up and hit him with his Frogsplash finisher. The Paparazzi guy ran in and broke up the pin attempt, causing Compton to be disqualified. This is the first time the Paparazzi guy has even become involved physically in any way. I guess he did it via Mo Green by proxy. Match was less than 5 minutes long. A strange and really flat way to end an otherwise decent show that had good energy to it.
