I was unable to attend OVW live this past Wednesday night, so here's the TV report, which this is episode #590 to be exact. OVW airs in Louisville on WKYI Saturdays at noon, with a 9 PM replay. The new episodes are uploaded on the OVW website every Monday at www.ovwrestling.com.
Today is the beginning of "wrestling week" in Louisville. Today and tomorrow, December 4th and 5th, is a training camp at the Davis arena. John Laurinaitis of the WWE will be there tomorrow, Sunday Dec 5th, scouting talent. December 6th is RAW in Louisville. Then Wednesday thru Saturday is four wrestling events in four straight days at the Davis arena, which OVW is calling "A December 2 remember". Wednesday the 8th is the OVW TV taping. Charlie Hass & Shelton Benjamin will be wrestling at the OVW TV taping on the 8th. December 9th and 10th are the ROH TV tapings at the Davis arena, the first time ROH television has been taped outside of Philadelphia. Then finally Saturday December 11th is OVW Saturday Night Special.
Dean Hill & Kenny Bolin were the TV announcers for this episode, Ron Hed was the ring announcer and Brittay DeVore was there too. The crowd didn't look very big this week.
1. The Elite (Ted McNaler & Adam Revolver) beat Ryan Nemeth & Alex Silva
The Elite gets a title shot at OVW tag champs Fighting Spirit at Saturday Night Special, since the 90 day stipulation that those two teams couldn't face each other is finally up. Fighting Spirit won the tag titles from the Elite on August 28th. Kenny Bolin's son, Christopher Bolin, still wearing black gloves for some reason, joined Kenny and Dean Hill in the booth here. He was talking about who he might sign to be the first member of Bolin Services 2.0, which he's taken over from his father. He was impressed with the Elite. He kept knocking Alex Silva, billed as being from Portugal, calling him "Aldo Montoya". Dean Hill said he was being "Bolin-ized". Silva took the heat here. Bolin compared the Elite to the Midnight Express. The Elite won when they hit their double team spear spot on Nemeth. Ryan Nemeth is a name to remember by the way. I'm pretty sure with his look, body, and being Dolph Ziggler's brother, that he'll be signed by the WWE.
They took it to clips of last week when OVW heavyweight champion Matt Barela was in the ring being interviewed by Jim Cornette, and was very angry that Mike Mondo turned heel and hit him in the head with a chair, giving Barela a concussion, at the November Saturday Night Special. Mondo gets a shot at Barela at the December 11th Saturday Night Special, but Cornette told Mondo not to come back to the Davis arena until then for his own safety due to what Barela wants to do to him. This segment also saw "Mr. Media" Cliff Compton come out, say racial stuff to Barela, and Barela attacked him and stripped Compton down to his underwear.
Jim Cornette and Dean Hill at the desk took us to clips from July, 2001 at the Louisville Gardens were Flash(Flanagan) beat Chris Jericho to retain the OVW title. Flash has now returned to OVW in 2010, and talked about this match and beating Jericho in a promo a few weeks ago.
Flash and Jericho had a good match back then, Jericho was the face. The ref was bumped. Flash had Jericho down, so another ref came in and counted. Jericho kicked out, so Flash decked that ref. Jericho hit two powerbombs on Flash. The original ref made a groggy count, but Flash kicked out. Flash then won after giving Jericho a low blow. Flash took the house mic and said he's be at RAW on Monday night and would beat Steve Austin and be the new WWF champion. That, of course, didn't happen. I think Flash, now a face here, said in his promo a few weeks ago that he tore his triceps in that match against Jericho and that's what stopped him at the time, but I saw no evidence of him being injured in this match.
2. Flash beat Omar Akbar (with Mr. B)
Cornette joined Bolin and Hill in the booth here. Flash faces James "Moose" Thomas at Saturday Night Special on December 11th. Flash beat Thomas in an impromptu match a few weeks ago on TV. Akbar and Mr. B both work for current OVW TV champion Mohammad Ali Vaez, but have not been getting along well lately. B has been "accidentally" causing Akbar to lose matches. Cornette said they were supposed to have a house show tonight, Dec 4th, in Whitesburg, Kentucky, but local promoter Jerome Hatton of the Everidge Funeral Home in Whitesburg has disappeared, people are looking for him, and Cornette has heard something about criminal sexual charges against Hatton looming. Cornette said if Hatton has your money, you're not alone. Cornette called Hatton todays "worst person in the world". Heh...
They spoke of Flash getting back in the OVW title picture. Akbar gave Flash his released Fishermans Suplex. Flash came back on Akbar though with a bunch of offense, and hit him with his "Whipflash" finisher, also known as the "Buff Blockbuster". Mr. B got on the apron to prevent the pin, and thew some handcuffs into the ring, which Flash easily picked up, hit Akbar with them, and won the match.
The postmatch saw B in the ring again yelling at Akbar for losing. Akbar pushed B in the corner, yelling at him. Mohammad Ali Vaez came out, and to some surprise, hit Akbar. The storyline here is Akbar and Vaez have been friends since childhood. Both Vaez and B put the boots to Akbar. Alex Silva came out and made the save. I don't know about Akbar as a face, he's not exactly a warm cuddly type.
Back from commercial, Vaez was still on the floor with Hill in front of the desk ordering Cornette to come out now. Vaez was very unhappy about Alex Silva getting involved his his family business. Cornette came out. Vaez said Akbar has failed him too many times. Cornette asked about all that Mr. B has done wrong. Vaez said B wasn't the issue, Alex Silva is the issue. Cornette added Vaez vs. Silva at the December 11th Saturday Night Special for the OVW TV title.
Cornette then threw it to clips from last week where he was in the ring with Paredyse and his "Man-servant" CJ Lane, and their current nemesis Rudy Switchblade. CJ Lane sprayed Switchblade in the face with mace at the November Saturday Night Special. Switchblade here introduced his "cousin", Black lady wrestler Epiphany Jones, and these two teams will meet in a mixed tag match at the December 11th Saturday Night Special, called the final conflict between Paredyse and Switchblade. We'll see about that one.
Brittany DeVore conducted a backstage interview with Switchblade and Jones. Switchblade said Paredyse' time was running out. Jones said she was going to make Lane's face bleed.
Cornette was in the ring, which had a table with a pink table cloth on it, and some cupcakes on top of it. He brought out the Blossom Twins, Holly and Hannah. One of the cupcakes was large, and I knew already someones face was going in that one. The Blossoms, who are legit from England, do a gimmick where they bake cupcakes and other stuff, and often sell them at Davis Arena. They even have cupcakes on their wrestling pants.
The Blossoms said to share some Christmas cheer they were going to raffle off the cupcakes tonight, especially the big one, and give the proceeds to the Salvation Army. Out came OVW womens champion Lady JoJo and Taryn Shay.
JoJo said it was sweet and cute, but said if the Blossoms bake the way they wrestle, they were about to poison somebody. JoJo said as charity, she was going to have Taryn try the cupcake and see if it was safe. Taryn stuck her finger in the large cupcake, and tasted it. Taryn said it was actually good. She stuck her finger in it again, and put her finger in Lady JoJo's mouth and let her taste it, which Cornette said was "suggestive". heh
JoJo said it was good, and said they were going to take the cake. Lady Jo Jo and Shay attacked the Blossoms. JoJo bumped to the floor, and the Blossoms pushed Shay's face into the big cupcake. It was totally predictable, but Shay really got a good face full of the cupcake frosting on her.
"Mr. Media" Cliff Compton (with Mo Green & The Paparazzi Guy) was scheduled to face Elvis. No, not THAT Elvis, but the match never happened. Compton took the mic and said he was in a bad mood. Compton had Green give Elvis 20 bucks and told him to get out of my ring. Elvis took the money and left. Compton said it was the biggest payoff Elvis will ever get in the wrestling business, which might end up being true. heh.
Compton said he was embarrassed that OVW champion "Lowrider" Matt Barela stripped him down to his underwear last week. Compton said it was personal now. Compton said the MMA, aka "Mo Money Associates", did some research and found out that Barela's wife is named Odessa. Compton said he was going to go to that "Taco Stand" Barela calls a house, find his wife Odessa, and strip her down to her bra and panties, assuming she even wears a bra and panties.
A very angry Matt Barela ran out, but was stopped from getting into the ring by several refs, the geek squad, and Cornette came out trying to restore order. Barela took a chair from the stands and threw it in the ring. The segment just ended though, with nothing resolved, and when they came back for the TV main event, it wasn't an issue the rest of the show. That felt weird. They should have cut to the back again or something of these guys brawling, or trying to keep them separated, or something at least. It's pretty clear though, Cliff Compton is going to get involved in the Barela vs Mondo title match on December 11th.
3. Fighting Spirit (Raphael Constantine & Christopher Silvio) beat Raul Lamotta & Jimbo Onoo to retain the OVW Southern Tag Team titles
These teams met at the November Saturday Night Special, with Fighting Spirit retaining the tag titles. Lamotta & Onoo were manufactured as a makeshift team to bridge the gap until the 90 day stip that the Elite and Fighting Spirit couldn't face each other was up. I haven't been a fan of Lamotta & Onoo as a team, but they looked pretty good this match really. By far the best I've even seem them look actually.
The match began before Ron Hed could finish the introductions. Fighting Spirit took Onoo & Lamotta out with stereo dives to the floor. Back in the ring though, Onoo hit a sidewalk slam on Silvio, then held him up in a choke for awhile, and finally dropped him with a Tree slam. Constantine came in and ran wild, but ended up taking the heat. Bolin was talking about his son Christopher a lot, and who he might manage. Bolin said the first guy he ever managed was Jack Black. Silvio finally came back in, and unleashed some of his wicked kicks to Lamotta. Onoo tried to save Lamotta, and got kicked in the face by Silvio for his trouble. Silvio took both Onno and Lamotta out on the floor with an Asai Moonsault. Back in the ring, as the ref was tangled with Onoo and Constantine in the far corner, Lamotta and Silvio battled on the second rope in another corner. They both fell down after a double headbutt, with Lamotta going to the floor. The Elite came out and threw Lamotta into the ring post, then threw him back in the ring, and Silvio covered him for the win. The story here is even though Lamotta & Onoo are heels, and the Elite are heels, Fighting Spirit is who The Elite wants, and have been waiting 90 days to face them for the titles again. Decent match, better than I expected, that's for sure.
A lot went on this show, but didn't feel like a show that flowed that well for some reason. I don't know, maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it. Like I said, the stuff with Compton and Barela not being addressed again bugged me. Still though, a fairly fun show overall. Not super wrestling heavy this week, but I really love the focused storytelling of OVW. It's a real strong point for them.
