I was unable to attend Ohio Valley Wrestling live this past Wednesday, so here's the TV report for December 18th. OVW airs in Louisville on WKYI Saturdays at noon, with a 9 PM replay. This show, taped December 15th, was the last TV taping of the year. The tapings will resume on Wednesday, January 5th, 2011. Saturday January 8th is the next big house show at Davis arena, titled "Rage in the cage". More on that in a bit. The crowd was very small for this show, under 50. They had four live shows in four days last week, plus there was an ice storm in Louisville late Wednesday night. Dean Hill & Kenny Bolin were the TV announcers. Ron Hed was the ring announcer, and Brittany DeVore was there too.
The show opened with Jim Cornette, "Mr. Media" Cliff Compton, and OVW heavyweight champion "Lowrider" Matt Barela sitting at a table in the ring. Mo Green stood behind Compton, as did his personal attorney, Christian Mascagni. Mascagni was Kenny Bolin's personal attorney in OVW recently too, and now Mascagni's Law firm has a banner hanging on the side wall, so he's a sponsor of the show. Last week Cornette said Mascagni was so good as a lawyer that he once got a sodomy charge reduced to tailgating..Heh. Referee Chris Sharpe was in the ring as well.
Cornette said Compton left the arena during the December 11th Saturday Night Special show, but then returned during the main event, of Barela defending the OVW title against Mike Mondo, dressed as a fan, and attacked Barela. Barela lost to Mondo by DQ, but he retained the title. Cornette said Barela knocked ref Chris Sharpe unconscious Saturday night, and Sharpe was considering filing assault charges, but has been talked out of it. Cornette said Barela and Compton have both been fined 500 dollars apiece by OVW, and both have been reprimanded by the Kentucky Athletic commission for their actions at Saturday Night Special. Cornette said Mike Mondo has refused to set foot back in the Davis arena until he is recognized as the champion, or is competing for the title. Cornette said the OVW championship situation was a mess. He asked Compton to explain himself.
Compton told a convoluted BS story where he said he left after his match at Saturday Night Special, but then realized he forgot his $4,000 Gucci leather jacket, so he and Mo Green had to come back to get it. Compton said he had to wear a mask when he came back as to not draw attention to himself during the Mondo vs Barela match. After all, Cliff Compton is "Mr. Media". Christian Mascagni took the mic and cut a promo on Cornette, said he's been against Compton since he came back to OVW.
Cornette told Barela OVW simply cannot tolerate him attacking officials. Barela explained to referee Sharpe why he accidentally hit him. Sharpe and Barela shook hands.
Cornette said to get this issue settled, there will be a triple threat match in a steel cage with no time limit and no DQ on January 8th. He said Mondo has already agreed to any match for the title. Both Compton and Barela signed the contract for it.
Cornette said he has made arrangements for a special ringside enforcer, and the keeper of the key, so nobody can get in out out of the cage. It was Steve Yancy of the Jefferson County Sheriffs Department, who is a big Bald black man. Yancy got in the ring and talked a bit.
1. James "Moose" Thomas beat Rudy Switchblade
It looks like the beefy Thomas has added table weight, which he doesn't need, in just the last few weeks. Christopher Bolin, not wearing black gloves this week, joined Dean Hill & Kenny Bolin in the booth, much to the chagrin of Hill. Christopher Bolin said he was here again to scout Thomas. Switchblade gave Thomas a dropkick off the apron, and then beat on Moose on the floor. Thomas ran Switchblade into the ringpost from the apron, and then beat on Switchblade on the floor. Switchblade hit a Tornado DDT in the ring. Thomas took out Switchblade with a big boot, but missed a big splash. Switchblade missed his Frogsplash finisher. Thomas then won with his swinging sidewalk slam. Match was just ok.
They aired clips of Mohammad Ali Vaez defending the OVW TV title against Alex Silva on December 11th at Saturday Night Special Ron Hed and Kenny Bolin did commentary that night. Crowd looked so-so sized. Silva hit his running knee, and upset Vaez to win the OVW TV title.
Back to now, Cornette was in the ring, and out came new OVW TV champion Alex Silva. Cornette said this was the first time Silva was going to speak in OVW. Cornette said Silva attended a OVW camp a few month ago, and impressed officials, and was invited back, and Silva took them up on it and moved down from Montreal, and now Silva's the TV champ. Silva said moving to Louisville was the biggest decision of his career, and mentioned losing the first few matches he had on TV. But he said things have turned around. Cornette said the running knee of Silva is being called the "Silva Surfer".
Former TV champion Mohammad Ali Vaez w/Mr. B came out. Vaez complained about having to wrestle Silva for the title two months after he arrived in OVW. Cornette told Vaez that Silva beat him. Vaez called it a lucky win, and said Silva's kneepad was loaded. Silva challenged Vaez for a match tonight, and Vaez accepted, which will be the TV main event, for the TV title.
Cornette was in the lockeroom talking about the OVW Southern Tag team title sitation. He threw it to clips from last week where Shelton Benjamin & Charlie Haas beat The Elite(Adam Revolver & Ted McNalor), with Fighting Spirit(Raphael Constantine & Christopher Silvio) getting involved in the finish. Cornette said after that match, both The Elite and Fighting Spirit demanded to face each other at the December 9th ROH show, and they did, with The Elite winning the match and the tag team titles there. They had another rematch on December 11th at Saturday Night Special. Cornette took us to clips of the December 11th match. During that match, Revolver took a chair, wrapped it around the ankle of Constantine, who was on the floor, and stomped on it. Revolver went into the ring, and he and McNaler hit their double team spear spot on Silvio to win the match and retain the titles.
Cornette then interviewed Fighting Spirit in the back, with Constantine on crutches. Constantine said his ankle is not broken, but it is is dislocated, and he is getting an MRI on it. He said he would be out a few weeks, and it would be touch and go whether he'll be ready by January 8th or not. Cornette said the Elite has been suspended until January 5th at the earliest.
Cornette was in the ring, and brought out the Blossom Twins(Holly & Hannah), who lost a loser leaves OVW match to Lady JoJo & Taryn Shay on December 11th. Cornette said now the Blossom's have to go back to England, and said they would be missed in OVW. The Blossom's said it was bittersweet for them. They said sooner or later they will be back in OVW. Cornette said since the Blossom's have given so many cupcakes out, that they'd give them a farewell cake. The ring filled up with refs, babyfaces and announcers, and many hugs were exchanged.
Kenny Bolin, at the desk, took the mic and had a beef. Bolin said Jim Cornette was taking up too much TV time and is involved in every segment, which is true. Heh. Plus Bolin said Cornette chases him away from the desk so he can do commentary. Bolin said he was challenging Cornette to be in the ring for a live "Bolin Alley" on January 8th.
2. Alex Silva beat Mohammad Ali Vaez (with Mr. B} by DQ to retain the OVW TV title
TV main event time. Silva got the better of it early. Vaez turned the tide though, and kept control fo awile. Vaez unloaded with the "other" Muhammad Ali style punches. Vaez missed a charge to the corner and went into the post. Both guys exchanged blows. Silva rattled Vaez with several kicks and slick moves. Silva hit his "Silva Surfer" running knee, and Vaez rolled to the floor. Silva dragged Vaez into the ring, but Mr. B got in the ring and attacked Silva for the DQ. B brought handcuffs into the ring, and Vaez cuffed Silva to the top rope, and beat on him. Several refs were held at bay by Mr. B as Vaez had his fun, ending the final OVW TV show of 2010.
Only two matches this week, and a few clips from Saturday Night Special, so it was a lot of talking, but most it was at least passable. Bolin is right though, as much as I enjoy watching and listening to Cornette, he is all over this show big time.
