mr simmons , tom renesto either booked for gulas or was something between the gulas promotion and the shieks promotion...renesto at one time did a program with randy savage, all i remember is renesto coming on tv with a tire tool after savage...i was a kid then so i dont remember much about the angle..boutwell seated maybe 4500.. they rarely use it anymore..they has talked about the museum next door purchasing it , then i heard was gonna be torn down so i dunno last i saw in tv they was using it for warm place for the homeless..wrestlebirmingham was using the zamora temple for matches buut i think family problems what kept the promotion from running full time... so i your opinion mr simmons how good was renesto at thinking of angles..i never got see him wrestle...

Tom Renesto was one of the smartest bookers I ever worked for. He was able to look long range to work his angles and laid out a good ground work to get them over. He would be blowing off or finishing a program in the main event and he would have two other things working in the preliminary bouts for the weeks to come. As far as Tom's work, him and Jody Hamilton were one of the best tag teams I ever had the privilege of being in the ring with, or seeing for that matter. As the Assassins they were at the top of their game. He was the booker for Nick Gulas as well as The Sheiks promotions. He was going to try and shuffle talent between the promotions. He offered me a position in Detroit but thank goodness I was to smart for that. A long way from Atlanta and the guys were not making any money at that time.

Bobby, I never ever knew Tom Renesto booked for Gulas and the Sheik! Did he do that while booking for Paul Jones? I never knew him. He was always standing on the sidelines, very quiet but a strong presence. I know he knew who I was because I've heard that he spoke of me from time to time, but I never met him. Did he just do all the other booking long distance or did he go back and forth? I'm glad you didn't end up in the Cobo Arena! The Varsity would not have been near the fun!

tom renesto even on tv always acted like a gentleman...i think the savage angle centered around his son tom jr who was a referee ...i dont know how he came to book for gulas but he had couple wrestling angles for himself, but i never got to see him wrestle...i did see him at the matches a few times here and there and he always acted like a gentleman

When I was a kid, I saw Charlie Carr. By then he was a prelim worker, usually the curtain raiser. Every Saturday night on "Live Atlanta Wrestling," during the last match Ed Capral would say, "Charlie Carr is standing by." He said that every week and we never saw Charlie Carr for they never had time for another match. My Mom didn't even know who he was but she felt sorry for him. She'd say, "Why don't they let him wrestle?" We'd laugh. They promoted a card of "Wrestling Under the Stars" at Moreland Shopping Center. Well, that was my (and Bobby's) neck of the woods. They had posters in the store windows with a picture of Sputnik Monroe, no names or line up, just his picture and two or three other pics of top guys. We went. The ring was set up in the parking lot. I was ready for Monroe, who was a heel at the time. Instead, out from Friedman's Jewelers, that they used for a dressing room, came Charlie Carr! I think he worked with Derrel Cochran, the one and only match.

I remember that Poffo wrestled some in Ann Gunkel's All South. I'm just wonder if he ever wrestled for GCW,maybe in the 60's?

Had a great weekend at The Gulf Coast Wrestling Reunion. It was a weekend with mixed emotions as we received news of Angelo Poffo's death and those of us that knew him were deeply saddened. But as the festivities got underway our spirits were elevated as much as they could be. We missed several people this year that were not there for various reasons. However some new faces did make an appearance, Frank Morrell was there for the first time since 1998. Buck Robley, Sonny King, and Levi Banks were there. I was very glad to see Susan Green and Darling Dagmar make there first trip to Mobile. I had not seen Susan in over twenty years and it was my first time meeting Dagmar. She was leaving the business as I got started. I was also very glad to see Michael Hayes and Buddy Roberts when they stopped by on Saturday. I have a lot of great memories of The Freebirds and the good times we had on the road. Many of the regulars were there Charlie Smith, Scrappy McGowan, Danny Hodge, Mac MacMurray, Joyce Grable, Percy Pringle(aka Paul Bearer), Bob Kelly, and many more. This is the weekend I look forward to every year. This year I am taking the double dip and going to Vegas for The Cauliflower Alley Club. Oh, well....back to the real world....
