The first time that I know of that the Bell was used for wrestling was 1940. There was a combo wrestling card on July 26. It was known as Municipal Auditorium until 1951, I think. The Augusta Chronicle archives are loaded with advertisements. I have a handful saved on my computer. I need to see if the Harley Race-Tommy Rich switch is in the paper. It looks like October 25, 1982 was the last time that GCW used the Bell. They had sometimes used the Civic Center before then, but they used it exclusively afterwards. The Bell was not the only arena in Augusta used to hold wrestling from 1940-82. A few other places held cards, but the vast majority were here. Text of May 31, 1961 article: Mr. X is identifiedAn anonymous Augusta wrestling fan Monday night uncovered the identity of the wrestling world's Mr. X, although he didn't exactly do it by removing the mask. What this fan did was to cut him across the left seat of his wrestling trunks with a pocket knife. Police records gravely reported that Johnny King, 32, of 72 Houston Ave., Atlanta (alias Mr. X) was treated at University Hospital for the laceration and released. Lt. M.C. Watkins and Pvt. J.E. Ivey said the fan was one of many shouting strenously for Mr. X's blood at the moment and that Mr. X had left the ring and ran into the crowd. "We have quite a few suspects, but we couldn't come up with a case," Lt. Watkins said. Postcard view. I think I have another one saved where instead of "Municipal" it says Bell, but I can't find it.
