I grew up in East Atlanta, only blocks away from Bobby Simmons. My family went to Moreland Shopping Center a lot and I remember the wrestling posters in the store windows advertising matches in the parking lot, "wrestling under the stars." This was back in the 60s and I was a kid. There were several pictures on the poster but the only one I remember was that of Sputnik Monroe. No names or card was listed. Of course, we were there that summer night but were a bit disappointed. No one who was pictured on the poster was there. As a matter of fact, there was only one match, Derrel Cochran vs. Charlie Carr. Remember Charlie Carr? Toward the end of "Live Atlanta Wrestling," a match would be underway and Ed Capral would always say, "Charlie Carr is standing by" (in case there was time for another match). My Mom would always say, "Why don't they give him a chance to wrestle?" We always laughed about that.

What great memories. The first "shopping center" match I ever did was at South Dekalb Mall. It was a brand new mall with hundreds of people strolling thru it every day. My, how times have changed. Moreland Shopping Center before the mall craze started was a happening place. J.C. Penny's, W.T. Grants, Kinney Shoes, grocery stores, furniture stores and of course a cafeteria. It was the place to shop in our part of town. It still stands but there are no longer the big stores and the neighborhood has changed dramatically. Thanks for the memories Danny... Remember the pizza parlor across the street? Great pizza and better sandwich's, also Lum's with hot dogs steamed in beer. Always thought that was big deal as a kid...

You guys are bringing back some old memories for me too. I lived near Grant Park and we used to go to the old Sunshines. Every Sunday my grandparents would either take us to the Rio Vista for catfish or to the Zestos for a good ole chili dog and onion rings with ice cream. My dad was a city of Atlanta police officer, so I spent alot of time watching wrestling in the 70's while he worked security. He always made me sit in the same place so he could keep a eye on me. He wouldn't let me roam around much. I love it when Charlie Smith comes to my shows and they get to talking about the old days of wrestling( especially bars and Stewart Ave.) SCOTT EAST

WOW! Talk about bringing back great memories....I remember all of those places. I lived near Lakewood Heights and went to the Lakewood Stewart shopping center and remember all the posters in the windows advertising the matches. Every Friday night we would go to Lums on Stewart Ave. and then off to the City Auditorium for the matches. Absolutely some of the best talent in the world at those matches. The late 50's 60's and 70's were the "glory" years in my book. Memories I will always hold dear to my heart. Thanks for the post, guys! Excellent.

I don't really know, all I know is that they were famous for the beer cooked hot dogs. Don't remember who owned it.

Was Lum's, Mike Lum of Atlanta Braves fame, place? I want to say it was.... The Chef Lums was a chain restaurant where the claim to fame was hot dogs steamed in beer. Nothing to do with Mike Lum. I think they all must have folded some time in the mid to late 70's.

Bobby, it was Sir Pizza! Best roast beef sandwiches! There was also a music store there, The Record Room. I was in there one Saturday and there was a guest appearance by Skeeter Davis, but I didn't know who she was (I was into Herman's Hermits). I loved the burger baskets at Zestos at Moreland & Confederate and remember Burger Chef? Rio Vista was good, as was the Horseshoe down moreland just past the drive-in. Great days! I do remember shooting pictures of matches at South Dekalb Mall. I remember Stan Vachon there.
