My friend and I at work were having this discussion tonight. He read in Bret Hart's book (I think, we were rambling on about different things at once) that Dusty Rhodes was grooming Ted to become the NWA Champion or at least wanted him to be the World Champion right before he jumped to the WWF to become Million Dollar Man.
Personally I thought if they had a legitimate chance to do it, it would have been 79-80 when Ted was North American Champion and Harley Race was the champ but in 85-87? I just don't see it.
Anybody else know anything about this story since Ted is probably one of the top wrestlers ever to define Georgia Professional Wrestling.

I am not positive I have ever heard this. I don't think I saw Ted Dibiase much before the WWF. It would have made sense from reading and watching youtube videos. He did seem to big a star before the WWF.

IIRC, I remember him facing Ric Flair and Dick Murdoch(or somebody as I only saw this on video once) costing him the match by piledriving him to the floor several times. This might have been 84 or 85 so this could have been the time frame and after a program with Murdoch or whomever it was that piledrove him, he might have gotten a shot again at Flair and eventually the strap.
That's the only time off the top of my head that I could see him being a legit threat to the NWA World Title.

dibiase was a huge star before his second run in the wwe. he was north american champion in bill watts mid-south area and had many title matches with race and flair. and always a just about finish to keep him in contention
