Today I went to a local Family Dollar and heard a loud noise. I looked over in it's direction and saw a big yellow catepillar machine tearing down the MacDonald's. Ah.....the sadness of the moment.
That was the first major league eatery in this town. It was on the main drag and one of the first things you saw of civilization when driving in off the interstate. Dick Stienborn used to promote wrestling for the ASWA here and that MacDonald's was the eating place after the matches. We got to be pretty well known among the wrestlers at least by face and some by name. We got to the point where we'd drive down with Ox Baker's wife and sister in law. That's who they said they were anyhow and I believed it. I remember seeing the Assassin Number Two up in the corner of the parking lot waiting for Rock Hunter to bring back the food. He had a mask but it wasn't the mask he wrestled in. I remember one time Stienborn or Koa Tiki one looking for something in the trunk for a long time. One of Ox's folks said they had a rule where the good guys couldn't go in a place the bad guys were in and vice versa. That's a good thing--that MacDonald's might not have survived if Stienborn and Ox or Cowan and Oates or The Assassin and Ray Candy got into it right there at the counter. But it's being torn down now and it will be rebuilt. Another piece of my youth changing or disappearing.

I did the ring announcing in Warner Robbins before I started refereeing. I saw many wonderful matches in that building. Working for Gunkel Enterprises and traveling with those guys was a real eye-opening for a 17 year old kid who did not know people really lived like that. Wife and Sister-in-law, huh? Thanks for sparking some great memories.... Bobby
