Great Championship Wrestling results from January 22 at the Gr8 Sk8 Plex in Phenix City in front of a packed house of 250+ (papered).
The show opened with Taylor McKnight making an announcement, serious as a heart attack, that there had a been a death in the pro wrestling family. The Prime Time Pro Wrestling logo appeared on the big screen with sad music playing in the background. They showed old GCW clips of Micah Taylor, Tracy Taylor, and David Young all laid out flat on their backs followed by an image of Billy Roper - R. I. P.
The video also had old GCW commercials from the time when Roper was their ring announcer spliced together with Roper saying ""Quentin, I'm sorry"..."My heart breaks for GCW"...GCW is Number One"...and "GCW is the greatest." Then they showed footage of an old commercial that ended with Quentin Michaels throwing Roper into the trunk of a car. The screen read "RIP Prime Time Pro, 2008-2009ish." The segment ended with a 10 bell salute.
(1) Frankie Valentine beat Johnny Slaughter (with Wicked Nemesis). Said to be long and not particularly good. Slaughter went for a slingshot sunset flip, but Valentine kept his balance and sat down for the pin.
(2) Southside Trash (with J.P. Money) squashed Omega & Rage. Omega and Rage were two large and horrible masked guys. Match had some comedy value as Raunchy was going into the crowd and eating hot dogs with the fans and then blowing his bad breath into the jobbers' faces.
The SST demanded a tag title match. Wicked Nemesis came out with three beer bottles. Raunchy ripped Nemesis for copying a gimmick from a 70s gang movie (The Warriors). Nemesis said now way they were getting a title match. Diane Hewes came and said she made the matches. She ordered a title match for February 12 except she mistakenly said the SST would be defending the titles and Nemesis had to cover for her.
Quentin Michaels came out with what appeared to be the Prime Time banner that hung off their building in Columbus. Michaels proceeded to do a tap dance on the banner.
Johnny Swinger's music played. A long-haired Mexican sometime referee came out dressed like Swinger, except he was called Donnie Singer. He begged to get his job back. Michaels told him to get on his knees and beg. Singer did as he was told. Michaels fired him anyway and told him to get out of his ring.
Michaels was joined by Princeton Gainey and Nemesis, now known as The Trinity of Terror. They called John Bogie out and tore him a new one for screwing Cru Jones out of the title last week. Bogie went to slap Michaels and got caned by Nemesis. The Trinity stomped the bejeezus out of Bogie.
After the intermission, the music of Bad Company played. Out came a security guard doing the David Young moves. McKnight asked him who he was. The guy said he was David Younger, and he also wanted his job back. McKnight ripped Younger for having the longest, most drawn out entrance on the indie scene. McKnight said he wasn't getting his job back either.
(3) Cru Jones (with Quentin Michaels) squashed Kareem Abdul Jamar.
Billy Roper's music played. The security guard came back out. This time he was wearing a white sports coat and a blonde wig. He was called Billy Rover. Rover wanted his job back. Michaels called Eddie Philips and Diane Hewes out to the ring. Michaels told Rover he wanted a war and he lost and there was no job for him. Rover got on his knees and begged. Michaels said Rover wanted Philips out and called Hewes "the supreme ****" and they were all still standing. Michaels clotheslined Rover, stomped him, punched him and beat him up all the way back to the dressing room. McKnight announced GCW as your winners.
(4) Orion Bishop (with Wicked Nemesis) beat Rob Adonis (with J. P. Money). Described as a decent match. Adonis worked better with Slaughter than he does with Bishop. Finish saw Bishop miss coming off the top. Adonis tried to climb and got caned by Nemesis. A stunned Adonis was then speared by Bishop for the 1-2-3.
Philips came out and passed out Prime Time t-shirts. He said they might be collectors items one day.
The Triad of Terror entered the ring. Nemesis was wearing a full on gas mask. It looked great, but hindered his heat because he was trying to talk through the mask. They pouted about J-Rod still being the GCW Heavyweight Champion. Title match coming up? Wrong. Gainey said J-Rod's mystery opponent would be "the fastest rising star in GCW" Ron Stalker. Nemesis said it would be "the most dangerous man in GCW" Murder One. Michaels brought out Cru Jones. That led to...
(5) Cru Jones & Murder One & Ron Stalker beat J-Rod in a non-title match. The heels gave J-Rod a massive beatdown. M-1 had J-Rod in a full nelson for Jones to punch him. J-Rod moved and Jones punched M-1, who shoved Jones. J-Rod gave them a double dropkick sending M-1 out of the ring. A second dropkick took care of Stalker, but J-Rod was a sitting duck for Cru's finisher.
Postmatch, the heels stomped on J-Rod no end.
Overall, the show was said to be entertaining but not much as far as the wrestling.
Thanks to Matt Tew.
